Music Research ♬

Hey Blog!

As our first experience into making and researching case studies, we delved into the world of music. As a group, we were assigned a genre of music at random—we got pop—and began our research into this new world.

To give ourselves more variety in our case studies, everyone chose a different production company or record label so that we could explore as many artists as possible. From Warner Music Group to Interscope Records to Republic Records, we researched 10 different artists or bands and analyzed their differing brands, audiences, and techniques that have all led to their own successes. I personally did my research using the Warner Music Group and researched Coldplay's brand, a band well-known and loved since the early 2000's, as well as a newer artist of the name Alex Warren. I went into each of their own histories and background and then analyzed their brands and marketing and distribution techniques. For example, Coldplay uses their tours and concerts to promote the music they'd be playing that night and they sell their merchandise (also promoting their music) during the whole night also. With their easily accessible website, every platform in which their music is available is effortlessly seen and their e-store includes more merchandise as well as physical mediums to own their music. Similarly, Alex Warren also uses the internet and other digital areas, such as social media, to promote himself. He uses his large TikTok and Instagram following to promote tour dates, album releases, and more.

Once we researched what has been done within this genre to create a brand, it was our turn to do the same. We were given 4 options of songs within the pop genre and we had to choose one to create a new brand for, from coming up with the artist/band to how their campaign would work out. My group chose the song "We Are Young" by fun. and after listening to the song a couple of times, we thought it best targeted young adults in their 20's to early 30's as its audience and that the band would therefore promote itself more through newer forms of social media, as well as on the internet with a website in which their fans could purchase their merchandise such as clothes or posters.

With what we learned in mind, we will continue to work on developing the brand for our brand new band as we continue to work on this project.
